How to read ChatGPT answers as formatted markdown on your phone
ChatGPT writes its answers in markdown. In the ChatGPT app they look nicely formatted. But when you copy an answer into a notes app, a message or a document, it often turns into a wall of #, ** and | symbols, or loses its structure.
A markdown viewer fixes this. Paste the text and it's formatted again.
Why the formatting disappears
The copy button in most AI apps copies the markdown source, not the formatted page. Apps that don't understand markdown show the source as plain text. That's why:
- Headings become lines starting with
## - Bold text is wrapped in
** - Tables become rows of
| --- | - Math shows up as
$...$or\frac{}{}
Read it formatted, in three steps
- In ChatGPT, tap the copy icon under the answer.
- Open MD Reader and tap Paste from clipboard.
- The answer opens as a formatted document, with a table of contents built from its headings.
You can also select text in ChatGPT, tap Share, and choose MD Reader.
Why read it this way instead of in the chat?
- Long answers are easier to read. A table of contents lets you jump between sections, and your reading position is remembered.
- Tables fit your screen. Wide tables scroll sideways instead of squashing. See reading markdown tables on a phone.
- Math and diagrams render. LaTeX formulas and Mermaid diagrams are drawn, even offline. See LaTeX math in markdown.
- You can keep it. Save the answer as a
.mdfile and it stays readable in any markdown app. See saving AI answers as markdown. - You can edit it. Fix or annotate the answer on the formatted page without touching any symbols.
Tip: ask for a document
If you plan to save an answer, ask ChatGPT to "write this as a markdown document with headings". You'll get a cleaner structure, which makes the table of contents more useful.
The same steps work for Claude, Gemini and other assistants that answer in markdown.
